Play’n GO has expanded its North American presence after receiving approval to supply online gaming content in Alberta, positioning the company for the province’s regulated iGaming market launch later this year.

The licence was granted by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC), allowing Play’n GO to distribute its portfolio of online casino titles through licensed operators once Alberta’s new commercial online gambling framework officially launches.

The approval marks another milestone in Play’n GO’s broader expansion strategy across regulated markets, reinforcing the supplier’s growing presence in Canada following earlier entries into Ontario and Quebec.

According to company executives, Alberta represents a key opportunity as Canada continues opening additional regulated online gaming jurisdictions beyond Ontario’s established market.

Magnus Olsson, Chief Commercial Officer at Play’n GO, described the licence as “another important step” in the company’s North American growth strategy, emphasizing the supplier’s focus on regulated markets built around player protection and long-term sustainability.

Alberta Prepares for Regulated iGaming Launch

Alberta is preparing to become the second Canadian province after Ontario to launch a competitive regulated online gambling market that includes both sports betting and iGaming.

Under the province’s new framework, the AGLC will oversee licensing and regulatory enforcement, while the newly created Alberta iGaming Corporation will manage commercial relationships with operators and suppliers. The structure closely mirrors Ontario’s regulated model, which has attracted major international operators and suppliers since launching in 2022.

The regulated market is currently scheduled to go live on July 13, 2026. Provincial officials estimate that nearly 70% of Alberta’s online wagering activity currently occurs on unregulated platforms, with the new framework designed to shift players toward licensed, provincially supervised operators.

Licensed operators will reportedly be subject to a 20% gross gaming revenue tax, with portions allocated toward First Nations initiatives and responsible gambling programs.

Several major gaming brands have already entered or begun the licensing process ahead of launch, including FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, and Caesars Sportsbook.

The upcoming launch has quickly become one of the most closely watched developments in the North American iGaming industry, particularly as operators seek expansion opportunities in newly regulated jurisdictions.

Industry momentum around regulated Canadian expansion has also accelerated through developments such as Amusnet securing Ontario licence, marking first entry into the North American market.

Play’n GO Continues North American Expansion

Play’n GO said it has already begun aligning its technology stack and game portfolio with Alberta’s technical and compliance requirements ahead of launch. An initial batch of titles is currently undergoing certification to ensure readiness for market opening.

The supplier’s online casino portfolio includes slots, table games, and branded content distributed across regulated jurisdictions worldwide.

The Alberta approval continues a broader expansion push by Play’n GO throughout North America and Europe, with the company consistently emphasizing regulation-focused growth rather than participation in unlicensed markets.

The company’s strategy mirrors a wider industry shift toward regulated expansion and compliance-driven operations as governments tighten oversight of online gambling markets globally. Alberta’s forthcoming market launch is expected to create significant opportunities for suppliers seeking early access to what many analysts believe could become Canada’s next major regulated online gaming hub.

The province’s combination of a large population base, private-operator framework, and regulatory model similar to Ontario has already attracted substantial industry interest months before launch.

As Alberta finalizes preparations for its July rollout, additional supplier and operator approvals are expected in the coming weeks, with Play’n GO now positioned among the early entrants preparing for day-one market access.
